I don’t remember the first time I met Aunt Beth, but I’m sure I loved her from that first moment. She lived in New York and taught at a school for the deaf. She loved children although she had none of her own.

I remember when she came to visit how my sisters and I would sit at her feet and listen to her play the guitar and sing. She was so beautiful. I think we all secretly wished that we would grow up to be just like her.

I was 12 years old when Aunt Beth came for the last time. She was only in her early 30’s, but was dying from Breast Cancer. Shortly after coming, she slipped into a coma.

I remember sitting by her bed waiting for her to take her last breath. My Mom told me I could paint her nails so they would look nice for the funeral. I think I painted them at least 10 times that night. I wanted them to be perfect.

She left behind a legacy of love and courage. She lived life to the fullest and never gave up. She lives on in our hearts.

This month’s project is in memory of the many women whose lives although shortened, will never be forgotten.
