My children are big on traditions and although most of our traditions started when they were very young, they never let us forget them. Extended family traditions are my favorite. The 4th of July starts with everyone gathering at my parents' house. My Dad's in the kitchen cooking pancakes while my Mother runs around giving assignments and kissing grandkids. The men begin setting up tables and chairs for the army that will be gathering while my sisters and I set out the food and catch up on the happenings in our lives. Finally everyone gathers and we proceed to gorge ourselves on pancakes covered with berries and whipped cream along with our favorite "Dutch Honey" syrup. Laughter and teasing is always present along with stories of earlier times. After everyone is full, we gather around the flagpole for our traditional flag raising ceremony. Songs are sung and stories are told of men and women who truly treasured freedom. As we end with our national anthem, there is a feeling of peace that comes from the belief that God created this great land and he will preserve it as long as there are families standing firm in that belief and never letting it die.
