As I woke up this morning to snow on the ground and a forecast for snow showers all day, I decided to hibernate. Having grown up in Utah, home of the ''Greatest Snow on Earth,'' you’d think I would be a lover of snow. Don’t get me wrong. I love snow as long as it stays in the mountains and only ventures down on Christmas Eve to create a picture perfect Christmas day. I remember loving snow as a child. We would stay out all day making forts and having snow ball fights. Snow always meant that Christmas was just around the corner. When I became a mother, my feelings toward snow changed. The first snowfall would unexpectedly hit in early Oct., so out would come all the snow pants, coats, boots, gloves and sleds. Two days later, it would be 60 degrees again and I’d put all the snow gear away. This game of ‘cat and mouse’ would continue through November until finally I felt confident in leaving the snow gear out to be tripped over for the next four months. Snow became just something else to make me worry about when my children started driving and one more excuse for not exercising. But then I pause a moment, as I look out my window and see my neighbor setting his daughter atop a bright orange sled at the top of their driveway. As he pushes the sled, giggles of joy ring through the air again and again and suddenly I’m reminded how much I truly love the snow. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! |
