PDQ Corner - August 2006 Project of the Month

Where did the summer go and how can I get it back?!! Every year I start the summer with the greatest intentions. I make sure that everyone is in a somewhat coherent state by 9:00am. We have breakfast, do chores, read for at least 30 minutes, and do a math page. This lasts for about 5 days and then my children rebel, I give in, and we all start sleeping until 10:00am. Chores are hit and miss, reading is something they do while looking at the back of the cereal box, and math just doesn’t happen.

Summer should be more about creating memories with our families and less about schedules and keeping the house clean. It should be about summer evenings on the porch talking to your teenagers, weekends at the lake, lemonade and watermelon, fireflies and sunsets.

Even though summer is almost at an end, it’s not too late to make some great memories with our families. Time is something we can never get back, so let’s make the most of it.

Have a great month & never stop creating!

Quick Tips
Don't be a slave to fashion; however, it helps to keep an eye on what is in the magazines and what is being worn on the street. Keeping an eye towards current shapes, style, colors and scale can help make your beadwork look fresh and current.

You may not know...

Semiprecious Stones - Natural stones that generally have a lower value than precious stones, including amethyst, aventurine, carnelian, garnet, opal, rose quartz, and others that are primarily used in fashion jewelry.

Precious Stones - Rare and costly gems: diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires.

What's New

We have now made our smaller packaged findings kits available for purchase in PDQ Shop under Beginner Kits.

Hot Trends

In July we attended the craft industries semi-annual trade show in Chicago. It was amazing. The hot beading trends at this year's show were wood beads, crochet beads, chains of all sizes and lots of great fibers. The colors were earthy tones with deep olives and browns contrasted with various shades of gray, plum, raspberry, and eggplant.
